Learn to Sail

We provide Adult and Junior RYA Level 1 and 2 courses, which should enable you to be able to sail a dinghy in light winds.  In order to help your skills develop we run a series of ‘Improver Days’ with instructors on hand, as well as knowledgeable club members who are keen to pass on their skills and knowledge.

Improve any aspect of your sailing from launching, racing to capsize and righting

Improve your Sailing

This is your chance to get some tips from our experienced sailors.


No matter what you want to achieve, but it successful capsizing and righting, to starting to race, Improvers days are invaluable.

There will be two sailors in our two safety boats giving advice and encouragement. The format will depend on the number of boats and the weather. No need to book, just turn up. The sessions will start at noon and finish at 17:00. It is hoped to have a short interval during the afternoon.

Sailing Courses at Chelmarsh

COURSE

Seamanship Skills:

Typically runs late summer

This two day course is for people who have completed:

  • RYA Level 2;

and have

  • Experience of sailing

Following this course you will develop more advanced boat handling techniques enabling you to handle a wide range of situations afloat

The course meets the requirements of the:

RYA National Sailing Scheme Syllabus

Seamanship Skills

RYA Certificates will be issued to those who successfully complete the course.

Improver Events:

Completion of an RYA course and club membership gains the support and help of our volunteers to help improve your sailing.

Less of a course and more of an on the water training session

These run every Saturday morning for those who have completed an RYA course with us, and are club members.

Adult Level 1

Learn to Sail:

Typically runs at Easter.

 



This is a two day course for people who have not sailed before.

On completion of this course you will be able to:

  • sail in all directions; and
  • complete a triangular course.

The course meets the requirements of the:

RYA National Sailing Scheme Syllabus

Level 1

RYA Certificates will be issued to those who successfully complete the course.

Adult Level 2

Learn to Sail:

Typically runs early summer.  



This two day course is for people who are able to:

  • sail a triangular course;

and/or have completed:

  • RYA Level 1.

On completion of this course you will be able to:

  • Rig;
  • Launch;
  • complete a capsize recovery; and
  • helm a dinghy in light winds.

The course meets the requirements of the:

RYA National Sailing Scheme Syllabus

Level 2

RYA Certificates will be issued to those who successfully complete the course.

Youth Stage 1

Learn to Sail:

Typically runs at Easter.



This two day learn to sail course is available to junior members and prospective members of Chelmarsh Sailing Club who have not sailed before.

Introduction to sailing.


Parents are encouraged to remain on site during the course and can assist instructors, to provide help to students after the course as they progress.

The course meets the requirements of the:

RYA National Sailing Scheme Syllabus

Youth Stage 1

RYA Certificates will be issued to those who successfully complete the course.

Youth Stage 2

Learn to Sail:

Typically runs early summer.



This two day course is available to junior members have completed:

  • Junior Stage 1

Following the course you should be able to:

  • sail in all directions; and
  • sail in calm conditions under supervision.

The course meets the requirements of the:

RYA National Sailing Scheme Syllabus

Youth Stage 2

RYA Certificates will be issued to those who successfully complete the course.
