If
you require any further information about these meetings or The Solo Fleet at Chelmarsh is one of the best attended &, in my own very bias opinion, the best Fleet to be in. Sunday racing for 2011 will consist of the first race being a 64 minute pursuit. The second and third races of the day will be class/pursuit hybrids. That is all boats will start in pursuit sequence but there will be a line finish set so that the lead boat will cross as close as practicable to the time expired signal. All boats will be finished only when crossing the line. Class positions will be recorded as well as those for the pursuit. If you're not sure about the Solo itself, it is a one design boat, originally built & designed by Jack Holt & whilst it was & sometimes is still is known as an 'Old Man's Boat' but for anyone who has sailed one, they will tell you that they are far from it-whilst there may be the 'odd old man' in a boat - they are fit & know that you work the boat hard. There are many different Solo's on the market & their increased popularity has made the second hand value quite strong - but there are always deals to be made. The National Solo Dinghy Association (www.solosailing.org.uk) is probably the best place to find a second hand Solo & they are more than welcome to offer guidance as to what to look for, though we do have our own Technical Assistant if you prefer a one on one conversation. Also there are plenty of Solos to look over at the club, from old wooden ones to new FRP & new wooden ones & no, there is no difference in speed - just maintenance! We also hold one of the Open venues for the Solo class, which this year takes place on 15th May 2011 & these are always well attended, as are the rest of the Opens within the Midland Series - details of which are on the Solo association website & they also hold Spring Championships, End Of Season Championships, Inland Championships, Welsh Championships, National Championships, Scottish Championships, Northern Area Championships, Winter Championships & even Pre Championship Championships! There must be one there to suit you! However, you don't have to go far to race, you can stay within the comfort of the Chelmarsh Solo Fleet, where everyone is happy to help you drag your boat up the slipway after a hard days racing & they are more than happy to give you an excellent race on the water ! If racing is not for you then try Saturdays which are well attended with like minded members who take a more leisurely approach to their sailing.
